The Nuttall oak is a strong and adaptable oak that provides summer shade and nice fall foliage. The Nuttal is also an important species for wildlife management due to its high production of acorns. The acorns are oblong, brown, ¾ to 1½ inches long and covered by a ⅓ to ½ inch cap and ripen in. A Nuttall Oak tree must be approximately 20 years old before producing acorns. It has a medium growth-rate and reaches a height of 60-80 feet with a canopy of 35-50 feet. The veins on the leaf are pinnate. In the fall, the leaves turn red. USDA ZONES: Zone 5, Zone 6, Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 9.

First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need. Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system. Once the tree is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material. Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets. When finished, water thoroughly. To insure your plants a successful growth rate and productive life, plant your seedlings per the instructions included in your PlantMeGreen package.
Plant oaks in an area where they have plenty of room to grow to their full size. Once established, oaks need very little maintenance. Since they are drought tolerant, they rarely need extra watering. They also rarely need pruning. If there are dead limbs, however, prune in winter.
