  • About Black Diamond
The Black Diamond Crape Myrtle variety represents the first series of true dark-leafed crape myrtles. The blooms of the Red Hot Black Diamond come in a bright red blooms which offset the intense hues of the dark leaves. When Red Hot first starts to bloom, the bloom may appear white but will darken once fully opened. As with any bloom, as time progresses the bloom will fade. The bright blooms of the Black Diamond reach their productivity peak during the summer and fall months. This variety has been described as having an intermediate growth habit, reaching 10 to 12 feet tall, a spread of 6 to 8 feet, and can be used as a specimen or in mass plantings. Crape Myrtles look particularly nice when lining driveways or fences, and can also be planted in a container on your deck or patio. These crape myrtles are drought tolerant, mildew resistant, and low-maintenance. The Black Diamond is hardy in Zones 7-9. USDA ZONES: Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 9.

FAQ: What is the difference between the reds in the Black Diamond Collection?

Red Hot™-We have found Red Hot to naturally prefer to take on more of an upright tree-form. The bloom color is the darkest red of the Black Diamond Collection.
Crimson Red™- We have found Crimson Red to naturally take on a shrubbier habit. The bloom color is the brightest red in the Black Diamond Crapemyrtle Collection.
Best Red™-We have found the growth habit and bloom color of Best Red to be right between Crimson Red and Red Hot. Best Red is also one of the earliest bloomers of the collection.

Most Plant Me Green trees can be shipped and planted any time of year, unless the variety is specified as only seasonal delivery (such as bare root trees). Our shipping schedule is Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This is to ensure our trees do not stay in a box longer than necessary and arrive to you as healthy as possible. If a package needs to arrive prior to a specific date, or at a more convenient time for you, please notate that upon placement of your order. On some occasions, severe weather and other unusual issues can delay shipping and delivery of your Plant Me Green package. Holiday shipping schedules are set by the carriers.
First, decide on a planting location. Pick a nice sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole about three times as wide as the root ball. Place the potted plant in the hole to make sure the hole is large enough. Make sure the top of the root ball is even with surrounding soil. Then remove the pot and place the plant back into the hole. Fill in around the roots with the soil, using your foot to firm it. Spread mulch 2 inches deep over the top. Make sure to water thoroughly using a hose not a sprinkler. Fertilize a new crape myrtle in early spring, beginning in March or early April. Add 1 teaspoon of a general-purpose fertilizer once a month until August, spreading the fertilizer evenly over the soil around the plant. Mature crape myrtles need to be fertilized in early spring when the plant begins to actively grow and again in early summer to encourage blooming. When planting for the a driveway or fence border, plant 12 to 15 feet apart. For a flowering hedge, plant 2 to 3 feet apart and cut down to 4 inches tall each winter. If using as a patio planter, plant in a planter at least 12 inches in diameter.
To help crape myrtles retain water, mulch with organic matter 2-3 inches deep, making sure to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Water regularly until established. Remove dead branches any time and prune weak branches back in the spring in order to encourage a strong and productive tree. Fertilize once per year as new growth emerges.
Black Diamonds are a revolutionary new series of crape myrtles that provide unique beauty to your landscape. Flawless black foliage emerges in early spring followed by masses of brilliant jewel-toned blooms that last until the first frost. Black Diamonds are perfect for landscapes of all sizes because they have a naturally compact habit, reaching a maximum height of 10-12 ft. and width of 8 ft. Style wise, Black Diamonds make attractive flowering hedges or beautiful trees to line your driveway or fence, they also perfect planted in decorative pots to place on your deck, porch or balcony.

Happy Daughter

The crape myrtle is a birthday gift to my daughter. She was overjoyed with everything from the great packaging to the healthy , vigorous plant. She lives in Zone 8a and it went into the ground when she arrived home. Due to having a P.O. Box ,I arranged for delivery to her work where she is the manager of Shipping and Receiving. I asked if there were any problems with delivery and she said," I know the delivery man and if it hadn't been delivered correctly, I would have kicked his butt !". She really is a sweet Chritian woman however her major hobby is tending her garden,"babies, ".
