Vitex - Shoal Creek

Vitex agnus castus
USDA Hardiness Zones: 6-9

Shoal Creek Vitex, also called Chastetree, is a long-blooming small tree (or shrub) that is often planted around porches, patios, and decks for its beautiful summer flowers and its ability to attract butterflies. Chastetree blooms in the summer in clusters of violet flowers that resemble spikes. Besides its beauty, the leaves of the Chastetree also boast of an aromatic quality. The tree is fast-growing and reaches a height and width of about 12 feet. It is hardy in Zones 6-9 and can be planted in full sun or partial shade. Chastetree thrives particularly well in the heat.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Plant your vitex in full sun and in well-drained soil. If you are planting in a container, it should be at least 32 inches deep and wide. If planting outside, create a 2 inch layer of mulch around the base after planting. Water once a week for the first growing season. Fertilize your vitex in the spring. Prune to encourage more blooming.

Memories of Mom

I order a plant to flourish for my cousin's wife and children in her memory ! Plant me Green was on time with the plant like tree , right now it's winter in NJ, , I know it will flourish in springtime

Very spindle and small

I had hoped that it would not be quite so spindly and the trunk would be more developed. It needs a stack to stand up and not fall over. I put it in the ground, and we'll have to wait to see what happens in the spring.

Already blooming

I love my VITEX, within two weeks it bloomed!
