Description

The Sun Valley Maple is a compact form of the red maple introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum. It is ideal for smaller gardens, or where a full-sized tree would be too large. The Sun Valley Maple is a showy fall-coloring accent tree for the home landscape, featuring an upright oval habit of growth, attractive red flowers in early spring, and brilliant red foliage in fall. It grows more slowly, and it matures between 20 and 35 feet tall with a spread of 15-25 feet. It is a male selection that is noted for its upright branches, reddish male flowers, and no fruit produced. The Sun Valley Maple has a narrower spread and can be planted in more restricted spaces. It may be smaller, but its fall colors are just as powerful, ranging from brilliant orange-reds to darker burgundy-reds. Full sun will bring out the full intensity of the fall colors of the Sun Valley Maple, but it also grows in partial shade. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil but prefers moist, slightly acid conditions; intolerant of alkaline soils. Very cold hardy and can be grown in USDA Zones 4-7.

USDA ZONES: Zone 4, Zone 5, Zone 6, Zone 7

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Maples prefer full sun or partial shade and may need to be staked when planted. Make sure to plant in an area where there is lots of room for the tree to grow. Create a 3-4 inch layer of mulch leaving room between the mulch and the tree's trunk. Water regularly after planting. Fertilize in spring and summer, and prune in late summer or early fall.

Seven Sun Valley Maple tree evaluation

Well, I did receive six Sun Valley maple trees in good condition, one tree, seem to have a terminated trunk halfway up with three laterals that we are perpendicular to the main trunk. I received an email, promising a replacement tree, but have yet to receive one, and have had no further update on the promised tree. The email seems to indicate that they will send the tree at their convenience….. Will I receive the tree this year?
