Issai KiwiScientific Name: Actinidia arguta
Best Planted In Zone: 5-9
Issai Kiwi is a healthy fruit choice with lots of natural sugar. The fuzzless kiwi produces a smooth, green fruit that is between 1 to 1 3/4 inches in length that grows on this vine and has a very remarkable, sweet flavor. The fruit is just a little soft when fully ripe. The harvest season is short so pick the fruit a bit early and let it ripen in a paper bag with apples or pears. It has eight times the vitamin C of an oranges. A mature Issai Kiwi vine can produce one hundred pounds of fruit in a single year. Issai grows rapidly and will require a support system to grow on. At maturity it can reach a height and width between 8-12 feet. It is heat-tolerant and ripens in late August. Issai Kiwi is self-pollinating, requires 300 chill hours, and takes between 2-5 years to produce fruit. USDA ZONES: Zone 5, Zone 6, Zone 7, Zone 8, Zone 9.

First, decide on a planting location. Pick a nice sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole about three times as wide as the root ball. Place the potted plant in the hole to make sure the hole is large enough. Make sure the top of the root ball is even with surrounding soil. Then remove the pot and place the plant back into the hole. Fill in around the roots with the soil, using your foot to firm it. growth can be rapid so use a trellis or horizontal wires at 12" spacings. If planting more than one, allow a spacing of 16 feet between plants.
Issai Kiwi thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers good soil on the acidic side (pH 5-6.5). Kiwis do no like to be waterlogged so avoid heavy or poorly drained soils. Do not fertilize this vine too heavily, this can trigger lush foliage growth but poor flowering and fruiting. Prune it as needed in late fall or early winter. Issai is perfect for containers in the shorter seasons of Zone 4 & Zone 5. Use a fertilizer that is geared towards stone fruit production.
