Description

Twombly’s Red Sentinel Japanese Maple is the only upright, columnar Japanese maple tree available on the market today. All other varieties are rounded and broad, often as wide as they are tall. This one is very different – it forms a narrow, tight column of beautiful rich red leaves, making the perfect accent in your garden. It is related to the Bloodgood Japanese Maple but this cultivar can be credited to Ken Twombly. The Red Sentinel earns its name from its uniquely narrow profile. This tree's leaves transition from a bright red in the spring, to a deep burgundy in the summer, and back to a fiery crimson in the fall. Plant Twombly’s Red Sentinel Japanese Maple in a sunny or partially shaded location. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in very hot areas. It will grow well in almost any garden soil that is not constantly wet, and benefits from organic material at planting time, and as mulch. It has no pests or diseases and is easy to grow. It will thrive with little care, and once established it only needs watering during dry spells. For a unique form of Japanese maple, this is the top choice.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Maples prefer full sun and may need to be staked when planted. Make sure to plant in an area where there is lots of room for the tree to grow. Create a 3-4 inch layer of mulch leaving room between the mulch and the tree's trunk. Water regularly after planting. Fertilize in spring and summer, and prune in late summer or early fall.

Beautiful little tree!

Though we just received it and put it in the ground, I can already tell it’s going to be a beauty! Love the red leaves and it’s slim nature! Great customer service too, very helpful and quick to respond! I also love their use of QR codes for all the instructions and info we need - clever!
