Description

Althea is a deciduous, ornamental shrub more commonly referred to as Rose of Sharon. The shrub produces beautiful double white blooms that look particularly stunning when planted in groups or for borders. Individual flowers stay open for one day and close at night. Since plants bloom on new growth, shaping or pruning can be done at any time. However, pruning is usually not required since the plant grows slowly and keeps a tight upright form. It exhibits a slow-to-moderate growth rate and reaches a height of about 8-10 feet and a spread of about 4-5 feet. Although tolerant of poor soils and drought in sun or light shade, this upright, deciduous shrub requires ample moisture to flower its best and to avoid leaf-drop. Some protection from mid-day or afternoon sun is beneficial for optimum plant appearance. Tolerance to aerosol salt and wet soils combined with drought-tolerance make this a fine plant for many landscapes.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

For the first growing-season, water on a weekly schedule. Once the plant is established, water only as needed. Since plants bloom on new growth, shaping or pruning can be done at any time. However, pruning is usually not required since the plant grows slowly and keeps a tight upright form. Prune in late winter or early spring in northern climates. Frequent severe pruning gives fewer but larger flowers; no or little pruning gives many smaller flowers.

Small but alive.

Kind of small for a #3 plant. Looked like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree.

Althea Double White

I ordered two altheas and they arrived as promised. I would have rated higher however the packaging could have been a bit better as the box was slightly crushed and the plants shifted a bit. One stem was broken at the top but nothing that a pruner wouldn't cure. I would suggest to have a barrier to hold the base in place to prevent shifting and contact your shipping carrier(s) to address the box damage.
